Maine Coon / Tabby / Mixed (long coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Large
Braveheart does a pretty good job of living up to his name. When he was rescued (trapped) at 6 weeks old - he was a terrified little cutie! So was his sister, Vida, but she gained her confidence by the time she was about 6 months old. It has taken Braveheart a bit longer than that but, in true Maine Coon fashion, while he has been working on his bravery -he has grown & grown and gotten more and more handsome. Unlike "average cats" that are generally full grown by the time they are one year old, Maine Coons (and mixes) continue to grow for 3-5 years. Not only do they keep getting larger - their hair gets longer and their tails get fuller. Braveheart has grown from a cute little kitten into a very handsome young adult (he will be 2 yrs in April) but probably still hasn't reached his full size and coat. For about the first full year of Braveheart's life, he would give a token hiss every time his foster mom or anyone else walked into the foster room where he lives. He stopped running and hiding long before he stopped hissing. He would just stay on the cat tree to get attention but he would always - without fail - hiss when you entered his room. And as he got bigger, so did his hiss (a little like a lion - a large open-mouthed hiss!) but if you knew him, you knew there was absolutely no aggression behind that hiss and he would've been awfully disappointed if it had kept him from getting the loving and attention he craves. At some point over the last year, he stopped hissing and became much more confident and out-going. While he had always nervously wanted love, he gradually started showing affection and demanding attention. He loves to climb from his cat tree onto a lap and stays until he gets pushed off! And he is a LAP FULL!! Braveheart will need some time to adjust to a new home. He will probably need a little more time than a lot of cats do. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you know that a cat has figured out that he can trust you unconditionally. Whether that takes 2 weeks or 2 months - to know that you have earned that trust - that they have made the choice to put their faith in you - it makes your heart overflow. Every cat is different and anyone that has been lucky enough to be involved in rescuing cats knows that they don't all learn to trust. We don't automatically deserve to be trusted. A rescued heart is mended with time, effort & love and trust is a gift we have the opportunity to earn. And earning that kind of love forms a bond with your cat unlike any other. Whoever takes a chance on Braveheart and gives him the time he needs to feel part of his new family will be rewarded with years of knowing they have truly saved a life and a heart. Braveheart has always been with a changing population of cats in his foster home and there haven't been any that he hasn't gotten along with. He has never been around a dog so we don't know if a home with dogs is a good idea. It could certainly be considered. He spends some (but not all) week ends at the PetSmart in Aventura. He can be there on most any week end that you want to meet him if his foster mom knows ahead of time.
